Aftercare
Tattoo Aftercare with Saniderm:
1. Leave Saniderm On:
- Your tattoo artist has applied Saniderm to protect your tattoo and aid in healing.
- Leave the initial Saniderm bandage on for the first 72 hours. This provides a sterile and controlled environment for your tattoo to heal.
- You can remove the saniderm early, but I would advise waiting at least a full 24 hours until doing so. Peeling off your bandage too soon could cause extra, unnecessary trauma to your fresh tattoo.
- Sometimes Saniderm can come off early on its own. If you bandage stars to come off and any of your new tattoo is exposed - or no longer covered - continue the process and remove the bandage completely. At that point the bandage is no longer protecting your tattoo.
2. Gently Remove Saniderm:
- After 72 hours, carefully remove the Saniderm bandage. Do this in a clean and sanitary environment, such as your bathroom.
- Peel the bandage back slowly and gently. If it feels stuck, you can use warm water to help loosen the adhesive.
3. Wash Your Tattoo:
- Using a mild, fragrance-free liquid soap and lukewarm water, gently cleanse your tattoo with your fingertips. Do not scrub or use a washcloth.
- Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean, soft paper towel or let it air dry.
4. Apply a Thin Layer of Moisturizer:
- Once your tattoo is completely dry, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, hypoallergenic tattoo-specific moisturizer or ointment.
- Gently massage the moisturizer into your skin. Avoid using too much, as it could clog pores and hinder the healing process.
5. Follow Ongoing Moisturizing Routine:
- Continue applying a thin layer of moisturizer to your tattooed area 2-3 times a day or as needed to keep the skin hydrated.
- Be consistent but don't over-moisturize, as your tattoo needs to breathe and heal naturally.
6. Avoid Excessive Water Exposure:
- While your tattoo heals, avoid prolonged exposure to water, such as swimming or soaking in a bath.
- Quick showers are recommended, but try to keep your tattoo out of direct water spray.
7. Avoid Direct Sunlight:
- Protect your healing tattoo from direct sunlight, as UV rays can fade colors and damage healing skin.
- If you must go out in the sun, use a sunblock with high SPF and keep your tattoo covered.
8. Avoid Scratching and Picking:
- Your tattoo will itch as it heals, but avoid scratching or picking at the scabs. This can disrupt the healing process and lead to scarring.
9. Wear Loose Clothing:
- During the healing process, wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent friction and irritation on your tattooed skin.
10. Patience and Care:
- Remember that tattoos take time to heal completely. Be patient and follow the aftercare routine diligently for the best results.
